How did the RWL Group come about?

Rachel Wilson started in February 2008 as a sole practitioner, working at home where the office was a small space to start. Then thanks to her husband Dean, the downstairs garage was converted into an office to ensure clients were more comfortable.

Rachel previously worked for a local firm for 13 years, where she started as the office junior and was made an associate 6 months before deciding it was time to take the leap and start her own practice. The experiences she gained have given her insight into a diverse range of industries and also the diverse dynamics that each individual business has. This experience has enabled her to work alongside clients in all stages of business.

The next step in growth was the purchase of an administration services and accounting software solutions company in February 2009. Rachel always had a dream to be the one-stop-shop, so to speak, for businesses but as a sole practitioner could not offer these services. The purchase of the business enabled this to happen and also brought about the move from home to the Group’s first office in Mount Maunganui.

At this time the change from being a one-man band to having a team occurred. This was not only a huge leap for the business, but also enabled Rachel to work through the process of having a team and being able to gain experience and knowledge to help businesses with their human resource needs. Due to the size of the team and the growth of the business the new office was now too small and a move to bigger premises on Fraser St, Tauranga occurred in September 2009.



Growth of the business has been fuelled by client referrals and word-of-mouth. The RWL Group team is experienced, driven and have got a reputation for being caring and going the extra mile for clients, which ensures that each client receives personal and professional attention.

Why am I in business? I am here to help my clients and being relaxed and approachable is paramount. Although I have worked in the accountancy industry for years, and accounting and taxation issues are second nature to me, going into business for myself has allowed me to develop my business skills, and I can pass on this advice to my clients. Being a relatively new business owner myself, I have experienced a lot of the issues first hand. Some issues were challenging where I learnt some lessons (I did not see these as failures) and this allowed me to develop some important skills which have not only helped me enhance my own business, but helps me understand how clients are feeling and what they are talking about when they ask questions and need help.

Why am I different? The difference between me and other accountants with the same qualifications, I believe, is my working class upbringing and my work/business experiences which sets me apart from other professionals. I know many of the pitfalls and challenges out there that are waiting for business people, hey I’ve experienced first hand many of them! I may not have all the answers all the time, there is no way any accountant can have all the answers, but if I don’t know something I will certainly find out. At the end of the day, I want to give my clients the right advice at the right time, so they achieve the right results.
